You Gave Them Wings To Fly High
Your eyes
never leave them
as the scramble out the door…
In winter you put enough
clothes on them
they
out weight a horse
god-forbid comes a cough
a sneeze
they’re whisked off to the doctor
legs tight together
you wouldn’t stop to let them
take a pee…
You watch television
the news
every night
you ask yourself
how it is
you can live being so frightened
disease
pedophiles
abductors and more
lunatics that come and knock at your door
is it any wonder
you lock and bolt your front door
they’re out there
so many
you can’t keep score
the tormented
the angry
that want to rip
into your happy home…
But the sun-rises
the sun-sets
each day you gave
you knew you gave your very best
the extra hug
the extra kiss
the extra little squeeze
when you bent down
stooped
got down on your knees
told them you loved them
so many times
you thought your children
believed
in the middle of the night
you’d lost control of your mind…
Now
open the door
to the broad daylight
you’ve tutored them well
strengthened their wings
taught them how to fly
wish them well
tell them to fly high!!!
