You’re never quite sure
how it happens
one day they’re imps
fat chubby cheeks
the next
they’re full bore
speeding
not a bruise or scuff
churning
like a whirlpool
along the hardwood floor
on their hands and knees
it matters not
how many times you’ve seen it
or witness
the miracle of the your sprouting seed
it’s like some strange magic
they bloom all too quickly
loom above you
like some giant awkward
foreign tree
